Some of our volunteers

A large team of people give up their spare time to keep Radio Clatterbridge running around the clock.

Whether it's a presenter, request-collector or music librarian, every individual is an important part of the team. Have you got the passion to join us on a weekly basis?

Please note that for insurance reasons we are unable to offer work experience placements, and membership is only open to over 18s.

They visit various parts of the Health Park each week to compile details of songs our listeners want to hear on air.

It is a rewarding role, as volunteers Helen Craven, Natalie Kelly and June Wood explain:

Who do we need?

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. From shop workers to accountants, teachers and retired people, everyone helps keep the station on air. Some of our volunteers have gone on to be successful professional presenters. But we are not here to train "wannabe DJs". Our primary focus is always our listeners, so we expect a level of commitment from new volunteers. We do not usually take on people who can only offer their services for a short period of time.

If you want to be considered for membership of Radio Clatterbridge, please read the Common Questions section below and then fill in an application form.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust requires that all Request Collectors undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, as part of the recruitment process.

Common Questions

Why should I join?
Members make a real difference to patients, visitors and staff at Clatterbridge Health Park. Volunteers get a sense of satisfaction from their efforts. People in full and part-time jobs, students, unemployed and retired people all help to keep the station running.

Who can join?
Radio Clatterbridge receives applications from a wide range of people however, in order to safeguard patient security and confidentiality, rigorous enquiries are made as a requirement of the Hospital Trust Security prior to acceptance, so not all applications are successful. For insurance reasons, membership is restricted to people over 18 years old and we cannot offer work experience placements. There is no upper age limit.

What is expected of members?
Applicants are asked to fill in an application form after which they are usually invited to Radio Clatterbridge for an informal chat to see if the station will benefit them and if they will benefit the station. We run recruitment sessions several times a year. A 3-month probation period normally follows. During this time, applicants are asked to collect requests from the wards, assist in programme production and be taught the basics of the studio. After this period is completed, and assuming the applicant is accepted as a member, they will be offered a regular position.

How much will it cost?
The annual fee for Full Members is currently £25 (or £12.50 for the unwaged). Subscriptions are renewed on 31st December each year.
All money raised through subscriptions pay towards insurance and the general running costs of the station.

When will I need to volunteer?
Each volunteer agrees to attend the station on a regular weekly basis at an agreed time. They are usually expected to contribute at least two hours per week.

Do I need experience?
No experience in radio is necessary. All you need is enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and sufficient time to dedicate to a very worthwhile and satisfying service to the community.
