Bookworm Peter Grant on his love of Liverpool

Peter GrantAn award-winning newspaper journalist has spoken of his love of Liverpool during a visit to Radio Clatterbridge.

Peter Grant was a guest on the Coffee Club and shared some of his life story with listeners in the health park.

The reporter was born in the city and spent more than 20 years working in one of the biggest newsrooms in Europe at his hometown paper, the Liverpool Echo.

Destined to work in the press, he first produced a school newspaper at the age of 10.

"Everyone's got a story. You use the skills of journalism to get the best out of people." - Peter Grant

With a little more experience under his belt, Peter worked at the Echo in the features department and became TV Editor.

Peter told presenter Di Gaskell how he oversaw the arrival of Brookside and Hollyoaks and wrote about the huge amount of local celebrities making programmes for the small screen.

Peter had been a friend of our patron Sir Ken Dodd for more than 30 years and recently paid tribute to the comedian as part of Doddy Day - our affectionate celebration of the Squire of Knotty Ash.

Sir Ken was the subject of one of the books Peter published for the Echo's parent company Trinity Mirror when he became their Book Editor.

He also oversaw books about the Liverpool Overhead Railway, Liverpool dockers and the Mersey Ferries as well as biographies of Charlie Landsborough and Icicle Works frontman Ian McNabb.

"I had a love of everything Liverpool. I wanted to put Liverpool in a good light and I thought this was one way of doing it." - Peter Grant

Peter is a big supporter of the NHS and, in particular, the good work that takes place here in Clatterbridge.

He recently wrote in his Wirral Globe column: "We must celebrate and support this unique institution which is the envy of every other country."

The author of The A-Z of Scouse, Peter owns the Literally... book shop in New Brighton.

He has also won an award from the Plain English Campaign and has a book of his own poetry out later this year, called Goes Without Saying.
