Wirral Advocacy Hub takes to the airwaves to improve patients' lives

Sophie Adam and Samantha Long with presenter Di GaskellRadio Clatterbridge listeners have been hearing about a new service aimed at improving their lives during and after their stay in hospital.

Sophie Adam and Samantha Long came into the studio to explain how Wirral Advocacy Hub can help patients who can't speak for themselves.

The pair spoke to Coffee Club presenter Di Gaskell to explain more about what they do.

They said that many people, especially the vulnerable with little or no support network, can struggle to deal with health and social care professionals.

"It can leave many feeling intimidated or confused. Advocacy seeks to help those people and have their voices heard on issues that are important to them." - Sophie Adam

Sophie and Samantha are regular visitors to Clatterbridge Health Park, speaking to people at Springview twice a week to give advice about support for dealing with issues under the Mental Health Act.

They can also represent any other patient who can't speak for themselves, are not confident or articulate, or can't easily retain information.

"It's easy when you're going through the hospital system and you've got your family or friends to back you up. But not everybody has that. We are that friend or family member to make sure you're being treated right." - Sophie Adam

The pair gave an example of how they can provide support at a care assessment meeting.

They can also help relatives represent the views of their loved ones.

The service is particularly targetted at those who are isolated and don't have a support network around them.

Samantha, a multi specialist advocate, explained how she wants to support people's right by empowering them.

"I found my own power and I want people to find their own as well." - Samantha Long
