Radio reunion for special anniversary

Radio Clatterbridge has hosted a special reunion to celebrate 45 years of Saturday programmes on the station.

Three of the original weekend presenters got back behind the microphone to share their memories with listeners.

Phil Price, Roger Hazlewood and Dave Williams were part of the original Saturday line-up when regular all-day weekend shows began back in 1973.

They joined current Saturday morning host Dave Adams to recollect their association with the station, which continues nearly half a century on.

The trio explained how the Saturday schedule rose from the ashes of the first incarnation of the station - a Sunday night request programme which had started 22 years earlier with young volunteers taking music on to the wards.

"We had only just managed to get a studio set up because they used to go around the wards with a record player. We used to broadcast from 6 o'clock until the requests ran out." - Roger Hazlewood

Roger, now president of the charity, had joined Port Sunlight Boys' Club in 1966 while still at school but by the early 1970s the club was being disbanded so he decided to continue the request programme with a small team of helpers.

He was joined by a young Dave Williams in 1973 when regular Saturday programmes began. His show, Mid-Morning Music, ran for 23 years.

Within months there was enough interest from the likes of Phil Price to establish a full weekend schedule.

Phil recalled how the studio was set up in the early days.

"There were lots of wooden cupboards bulging with 78 records, a small box of 45s and a goose-neck microphone." - Phil Price

Meanwhile, some of the charity's other volunteers were amongst those to be honoured during the programme with special awards to mark their long service.

Record librarian Bernard Thornley and presenter Andy Bonner, who have notched up more than half a century of volunteering between them, were given certificates from the Hospital Broadcasting Association.
