Lighting up more lives

Radio Clatterbridge has broadcast the annual Light Up A Life service at Wirral Hospice St John's to those too ill to make it outside.

The switch-on, which is now in its 20th year, attracted more than 3,000 people to the health park.

In a special programme, bed-bound patients were able to hear a relay of the annual event.

This year the Christmas carols were lead by the Sing Me Merseyside choir and a brass band while vocalist Sarah Lowe performed an emotional version of One Day I'll Fly Away.

Listeners heard special guest Ellie Roddick, 11, from Heswall, turn on more than 10,000 bulbs at the flick of a switch.

Her father spent his final weeks at the hospice when she was just six months old.

More recently, a close family friend also passed away there.

BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Billy Butler, who lost his brother at the hospice three years ago, read out a poem by volunteer Bill Collins praising its staff.

It's thought the fundraiser has generated about £100,000 for the charity.
